Dermaplaning Sterile Steel Blade #10R
The most popular dermaplaning is sterile blade #10R. The #10R dermaplaning blade is what most professionals refer to as a “Butter Blade”. It has a stainless steel finish that makes for a smooth, sharp finish. The rounded nose protects against the skin when performing too close to another area when dermaplaning.
All of our blades go through a 200% inspection, resulting in zero defects. Each blade is sterilized through gamma radiation to maintain safety and complete sterilization before being foiled for packaging. Because of the quality control procedure of the 200% inspection, this maintains production consistency.
Analysis of the skin is important. Here are two examples of determining which blade is suitable for the client:
- Skin integrity. Look for signs of skin thinnest, where capillaries are apparent. Adipose tissue (fat layer) has become less with aging. Clients may use Retinols for their nighttime skin routine. Also, if the hair is more vellus without density or coarseness. If this is the case, then we would recommend using the #10R blade for the first initial dermaplaning treatment.
- The stratum corneum is thicker due to overexposure to the sun. However, the skin may present hormonal challenges which irregular pigmentation is more evident. In this case, the #14 blade is good for skin refinement.
The Health of the Skin
The health of the skin is important. Before beginning any treatment exfoliation it is wise to have the client prepare the skin by designing a home skin care routine.
Skin needs balance and when the skin is out of balance the integrity of the skin may be in chronic stress. Whether recommending antioxidants to repair and support the skin’s defense or suggesting retinols (make them safe and effective with minimal irritation).
The skin may be elevated, in a performance state without stress or being immunity compromised. When the skin is balanced it is more cellular active. With popular treatments like microneedling, estheticians generally want the skin to have a positive cellular response.
Skin for Life’s philosophy is to indirectly create the cellular response by peaking the skin’s performance but with intermittent cool down periods of recovery. This creates an increased skin functionality or the ultimate skin workout.
Dermaplaning is the exfoliation peak. However, with every peak there should be a cool down recovery period before transitioning to the next skin step. This is why we say our treatments are “Treatments Within Treatments”.
For an example, oxygen infusion skin care is the perfect peak and cool down to enhance skin performance and recovery after completing a dermaplaning treatment.
Have You Ever Thought of This?
Dermaplaning before cosmetic acid peels? I am sure you have. When finding the right combination of peel and dermaplaning a professional skin care specialist may treat a variety of conditions like acne, sun damage, wrinkles, or irregular pigmented lesions.
However, it does depend on the right combination. The skin will have a heighten sensitivity after dermaplaning which means the application of the cosmetic acid will have a greater receptivity and may have an increased inflammatory reaction. So be prepared.
Use cold wands or cold ice water to soothe inflamed skin. However, remember ice can burn just like heat can so keep it moving and use a barrier between the skin and the cold.
Short term inflammation is positive. It increases the natural wound healing reaction which turns on collagen fibroblast therefore the end result improves skin tightness and volume.
What about the combination between Dermaplaning and Microneedling? Yes, it can be done. Again, it is all about receptivity and after dermaplaning the skin is at a heighten response so when miconeedling is performed it will work smarter instead of harder. Once again it is a peak so it is important to finish with a cool down and recovery for the skin. The short term inflammation will turn on collagen fibroblast for a youthful healthy complexion.

Thank you so much for offering quality dermaplaning supplies! The 10R is my favorite blade. It allows me to work close around the eyes and nose. Also, it helps me reach those delicate spots on the corner of the mouth. When I show my client the blade, they are more relaxed when they see the rounded edge.
Thank you!
